Los Angeles – Gangs in the L.A. Men’s Central Jail, which is notorious for its dangerous inmate population, are always kept apart from each other. But the general population is not segregated and this has set off a powder keg of racial tension, primarily between black and Latino inmates, that forced the Sheriff’s Department to lock the prison down last Friday night. Authorities took quick action after receiving an inside tip that certain inmates were plotting a racially motivated prison brawl. These inmates continue to be confined to their cells.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s spokesman, Steve Whitmore, said the facility banned visitors and inmate movement until just this past Monday morning. Now these restrictions are gradually being lifted.
Racial violence between inmates is an ever growing problem throughout the county’s jail system, particularly at the overcrowded and understaffed Men’s Central. Ever since it opened some 44 years ago, the Men’s Central Jail has played house to many of the system’s most homicidal incidents, including nine inmate murders between 2000 and 2007.
In 2004, one prisoner was even left unsupervised for hours, giving him the opportunity to kill another man who once testified against him. Months after that killing, Merrick Bobb, the county’s special counsel, described the jail as “nightmarish to manage” in a graphic report. Merrick concluded by calling upon the Sheriff’s Department to shut it down.
Of course, such was not the case, and this latest lockdown measure seems to have worked. As of Monday, no riots or fights have been reported.
