A 19-year-old man wanted in connection with a double slaying Saturday night turned himself in to detectives Sunday evening, the New Orleans Police Department said.
Kendall Gordon was booked into Orleans Parish Prison on two counts of first-degree murder, said officer Shereese Harper, an NOPD spokeswoman.
Investigators allege Gordon fatally shot Patrice Comadore, 22, and Jessie Bibbins III, 18, during a home invasion in the Lower 9th Ward.
The incident happened shortly after 10:30 p.m. in the 1800 block of Tricou Street .
Gordon and Bibbins, an apparent accomplice, forced their way into a house Comadore shared with two other women and four children, said NOPD Assistant Superintendent Marlon Defillo.
They were looking for money, Defillo said.
“What made them believe money was in the home is yet to be determined,” Defillo said.At some point during the invasion, Bibbins and Comadore started to struggle with each other and Gordon opened fire, Defillo said.
Comadore was shot in the head and Bibbins was hit in the neck, said John Gagliano, chief coroner’s investigator.
Bibbins dropped his weapon and tried to run, Defillo said. Gordon grabbed him, helped him get into a car and sped away to the 1700 block of Mazant Street, a little more than a mile away.
A neighbor, Lee Coleman, said his daughter arrived home about 10:45 and saw two men apparently trying to keep another man alive on the lawn next door and called her dad outside.
“They were saying, ‘Stay awake. Stay awake,’ ” Coleman said.
